History of the RPSG
The Roseville Parkinson’s Support Group (RPSG), was founded in 1995 and designated a 501 (c) (3) non-profit in 2004. Our organization provides education and support to individuals with Parkinson’s disease residing in the greater Roseville area and parts of Eastern Sacramento County (Citrus Heights, Orangevale, etc.). RPSG currently has a membership of 140.
The RPSG provides speakers who make presentations regarding topics of interest and are also a caring group that supports one other by sharing experiences.
Last year RPSG hosted seven Guest speakers who made presentations regarding subjects such as: Senior driving (DMV made a presentation as did a Private driving school), how to prevent falls, a physical therapist, Stem Cells treatment (a specialist flew up from LaJolla to make this presentation), and a presentation regarding "Think Loud/Think Big.
This year our secretary has scheduled the following Speakers: March the Highway Patrol will make a presentation regarding driving with Parkinson’s disease, in April we will have a Geriatric Psychologist speak to the group, future speaks scheduled are representatives from Medicare, the Placer County District Attorney’s office and a Physical Therapist.
The RPSG participates in local community events such as Health fairs. We have also, at their request, filled in as the representative for the National Parkinson's at local events.RPSG operates a weekly John Argue exercise class for members, an annual Holiday Party, an equipment closet (walkers and wheelchairs) and we purchase specialized educational materials for our lending library.
We meet at 1:30 on the first Tuesday of each month at the Maidu Community Center in Roseville. We average between 50 and 60 members for each meeting. RPSG does not charge dues but is solely dependent on contributions. Although we've not held a fundraiser in several years, in the past we've sponsored fundraising events, and since 2004, have donated nearly $25,000 to various Parkinson’s Organizations including the Parkinson’s Association of Northern California.
